5 steps for the perfect 'at-home' manicure

April 03, 2020 3 min read

For salon-quality, minus the masks

Not only is your home manicure set to be as polished as the ones you normally pay for, with our low-toxic nail polish formula, it's also going to leave you with healthier, happier nails too. At Kester Black, we're all about saying goodbye to nasties and hello nice-ies. That's why our nail polish formula is breathable, water permeable, and 10-free (meaning we've stripped 10 of the nastiest ingredients normally found in nail polish out so that it not only looks good, it does good). Oh and it's safe for kids too.

So without further ado, introducing the shortcut to amazing #stayhome nails.

Step 1. Apply cleanser

Apply Kester Black Nail Cleanser to a cotton pad and gently wipe over each fingernail, to remove any oily residue prior to painting.

This is an important (and often overlooked) step in the manicure process. Nails are made from keratin, and like your hair, they can become oily. The cleanser removes any natural oils and moisturiser to make a clean dry surface for your nail polish to stick to, therefore making for a longer-lasting manicure.

Step 2. Apply Base Coat

Apply a thin layer of Kester Black Miracle Treatment Base Coat to the nail and allow it to dry. Base coat adheres to your natural nail bed far better than nail polish does. It also binds better with your nail polish. The end result is a longer-lasting manicure.

Whether you’re looking for an every day Breathable Base Coat, or a Miracle Treatment Base Coat, we have the foundation your nails need.

Step 3. Apply nail polish

Using your favourite Kester Black vegan nail polish colour, glide the brush over each fingernail, coating the surface from base to tip. Allow to dry (five minutes should do it) before applying a second coat to each nail, covering any streaks from the initial coat.

If you choose to use a low-toxic nail polish formula like Kester Black, you're doing your nails a favour by minimising their exposure to harsh chemicals like formaldehyde and camphor. At Kester Black we steer well clear of these plus similarly difficult-to-say chemicals, like xylene and phthalates (which we pronounce as ‘seeya!’).

We get many questions about nail polish ingredients and what it means exactly to be 10-free, so we compiled this great little article with everything you need to know about low-toxic nail polish, and why should care. Read more here.

Step 4. Seal the deal

Seal your nail polish colour with a Kester Black Supersonic Top Coat. Take extra care to ‘cap’ the tips of your nails to prevent chipping. Allow another 5 minutes for this coat to dry. Our favourite Supersonic Top Coatis an antioxidant-rich formula that dries to the touch in 60 seconds.

Tip: To refresh and prolong your manicure, apply Kester Black Top Coat to just the tips of your nails every two-days.

Step 5. Apply some love

Apply one coat of Kester Black Self Love Oil to your cuticles gently massaging them in small circular motions moving towards your hand. Allow the oil to sink in. For best results, use daily before bed to allow the oil to work its magic overnight.

Self Love Oil is made of certified organic almond oil, jojoba, avocado oil and vitamin e so it's perfect to soften your cuticles. It can even be used to unchap lips, remove your make-up such as lipstick or mascara, and moisturise dry skin.
